Synopsis
Quel peut être l'engagement politique d'un philosophe ? Quel est le statut de l'intellectuel dans la société et l'histoire ? A travers les portraits de Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) et de Raymond Aron (1905-1983), de l'évolution de leurs pensées politiques et de leurs engagements, Jean-François Sirinelli brosse l'histoire de l'engouement politique d'une génération exceptionnelle, face aux événements majeurs du XXe siècle. L'un deviendra le porte-parole de l'intellectuel de gauche et l'autre du libéral modéré de droite. Mais, au-delà de ce clivage, l'un et l'autre illustrent merveilleusement cette volonté de penser pour agir, d'intervenir dans son siècle.
