La vie et le destin de Mahomet sont marqués par la rencontre entre la force des choses et la complexité psychologique de son personnage. Il fallait à l'Arabie une religion monothéiste qui ne soit ni le judaïsme ni le christianisme, un État cimenté par une idéologie adaptée aux attentes de ses habitants. De Mahomet allait naître l'Islam, tout à la fois communauté de croyants, religion et empire à dimensions mondiales, où devait se forger une civilisation nouvelle.
