The stunning companion to the Oscar-nominated film Winged Migration.

Grade 3-8–This oversized book that is meant to complement Jacques Perrin's documentary film of the same name is clearly a packaged product and does not focus on the film or even specifically on migration. Colorful spreads introduce 15 species with titles that paint a visual picture of the bird (e.g., Common Cranes are "Dancers of the Taiga"). The text includes first-person stories from the birds' perspective, historical tales, mythology, stories from a human's point of view, and some straight nonfiction. Photographs from the film showing birds flying, resting, congregating, and eating surround the text and create a sense of flight throughout the pages. While the book may be fun to dip into, it has little informational value as the maps are crude and confusing and the pictures that tie into fact boxes are too small to be of any use. An accompanying CD, attached to the front page, provides a few minutes of calls for 13 of the species and would be interesting to listen to while browsing, but the cuts on the disk do not follow the order of the book. A brief appended section gives information on the making of the film, including storyboards and photographs of the photographers on location. This title is more appropriate as a gift for young bird-watchers than for libraries.–Susan Oliver, Tampa-Hillsborough Public Library System, FL
