Synopsis
La musique peut nous émouvoir jusqu’au tréfonds de notre être, nous inciter à danser ou nous rendre triste et nostalgique. Quand on est un neurologue aussi compétent qu’Oliver Sacks, et ouvert, comme lui, à bien d’autres disciplines, comment peut-on comprendre et décrire ce pouvoir ? Plus d’aires cérébrales sont affectées au traitement de la musique qu’à celui du langage : l’homme est donc véritablement une espèce musicale. Bien des exemples le montrent, évoqués par Sacks avec la force et le talent qu’on lui connaît, depuis ce chirurgien frappé par un éclair qui devient soudain pianiste à l’âge de quarante-deux ans jusqu’au frère manchot de Wittgenstein, en passant par les arriérés mentaux mélomanes. La musique est souvent médicalement bienfaisante : elle anime les parkinsoniens incapables de se mouvoir, apaise les patients atteints de la maladie d’Alzheimer ou restitue des souvenirs à certains amnésiques. L’homme a une véritable dimension musicale. Oliver Sacks la décrit dans toute son étendue, d’un point de vue scientifique, philosophique et spirituel.
