À trente-quatre ans, Jim Vilatzer a l’impression que sa vie s’enlise dans la médiocrité. Employé dans le modeste delicatessen que ses parents d’origine juive russe ont ouvert dans une banlieue de Chicago, célibataire depuis un échec sentimental douloureux, pris à la gorge par des dettes de jeu qui le mettent à la merci de redoutables créanciers, il rêve d’un changement de décor. Lorsque son meilleur ami lui offre l’opportunité de repartir à zéro en Russie, terre de ses ancêtres, son instinct de joueur de poker lui ordonne de franchir le pas. Du jour au lendemain, le jeune Américain s’installe à Moscou, où il est embauché par la Fondation de la Mémoire. Sa mission : interviewer des survivants du goulag afin de conserver leur témoignage pour les générations futures. Petit à petit il se familiarise avec une ville inhospitalière qui ne ménage pas ses habitants, loin de se douter qu’en tombant amoureux de la belle Kaisa et en prenant contact avec d’anciens prisonniers, il sera mêlé à un complot d’envergure planétaire, ce que le gouvernement russe et la CIA ne verront pas d’un bon œil. Et malgré lui, il sera manipulé par les services secrets de l’Ambassade des États-Unis pour les aider à retrouver les criminels de haut vol.

Né en 1975 à Chicago, Jon Fasman a étudié à Brown University et à Oxford, puis a travaillé comme journaliste à Washington, New York, Moscou et Londres. Ses articles ont paru dans le Times Literary Supplement, le Washington Post, et le Moscow Times. Son premier roman, La Bibliothèque du géographe (Seuil, 2005 et Points n°1654, 2007) a été traduit dans une dizaine de langues
