Synopsis
Nacido bastardo de un general y de una marquesa y famosa escritora mundana, D’Alembert sufrió en su personalidad ese estigma. Cuando su talento innato le volvió a abrir las puertas de la corte y el mundo selecto, nunca quiso entrevistarse con su progenitora. Permaneció vinculado a su pobre madre adoptiva y a Julie de Lespinasse (de igual brillantez y bastardía). Como matemático y físico conquistó las grandes academias científicas de su tiempo. Como hombre de ingenio impresionó en los Salones y en las cortes. Usó el reconocimiento conquistado para confabularse y superar los enormes impedimentos para publicar la Enciclopedia —con Diderot— y también para que los ilustrados y la Ilustración penetraran en la cultura oficial. Con su estilo riguroso y claro, Gonçal Mayos presenta interrelacionadamente el pensamiento, la obra, la vida e incluso el contexto sociopolítico de D’Alembert. De esta manera se explican conceptos aparentemente difíciles visualizando los objetivos, intereses, pasiones y dramas a qué están vinculados y que les dan sentido. Así D’Alembert aparece como ese nuevo tipo de hombre y de intelectual que habría podido hacer ociosa la Revolución francesa, pero —a pesar de su gran triunfo social— la miserable corte no quiso evolucionar y ella misma se condenó. Por eso, fue la sociedad y la cultura postrevolucionarias los verdaderos herederos del bastardo y luego encumbrado ilustrado D’Alembert.

Gonçal Mayos es profesor titular de la Universidad de Barcelona y codirige GIRCHE - Grupo Internacional de Investigación "Cultura, Historia y Estado". Administra el blog MacroMayos y su web universitaria. Autor de muchos libros y artículos, Mayos ha acuñado el término "macrofilosofía" para caracterizar sus análisis globales, interdisciplinares y sobre procesos de larga duración.
