Breton (1896-1966) n'a cessé de mener, dans son interrogation de l'écriture et de la vie intérieure, comme dans sa participation difficile à une activité politique à laquelle il se sentait tenu, une aventure intellectuelle où se rencontrent Freud, Hegel, Engels, et une quête sensible, éclairée par Rimbaud, Lautréamont, Picasso, Chirico et Duchamp, l'une et l'autre tendues par la volonté de «changer la vie». Aventure et quête collectives, qui exigent une communauté organique, soudée par l'esprit comme par les affinités électives. L'aspiration résolue à faire advenir le possible aux dépens du probable, qui définit le surréalisme de Breton, passe par les chemins de la poésie, de la liberté et de l'amour. Elle a trouvé une langue qui lui assure une place parmi les premiers écrivains de son époque. Maintenue sans désemparer pendant plus d'un demi-siècle, cette volonté conduit Gracq à reconnaître en lui «un des héros de notre temps».Marguerite Bonnet.

Né le 18 février 1896 à Tinchebray (Orne), après des études de médecine, André Breton fonde la revue Littérature avec Aragon et Soupault. En 1924, il écrit le Manifeste du Surréalisme et prend l'année suivante la direction de La Révolution surréaliste. Jusqu'à sa mort à Paris le 28 septembre 1966, André Breton restera le théoricien et le continuateur du mouvement.
