If we submit everything to reason our religion will be left with nothing mysterious or supernatural’ Blaise Pascal, the precociously brilliant contemporary of Descartes, was a gifted mathematician and physicist, but it is his unfinished apologia for the Christian religion upon which his reputation now rests. The Penseés is a collection of philosophical fragments, notes and essays in which Pascal explores the contradictions of human nature in psychological, social, metaphysical and above all theological terms. Mankind emerges from Pascal’s analysis as a wretched and desolate creature within an impersonal universe, but who can be transformed through faith in God’s grace. This masterly translation conveys Pascal’s disarmingly personal tone and captures all the fire and passion of the original. Also contained in this volume are a comparison between different editions, appendices and a bibliography.

Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) was a French philosopher, mathematician, physicist, and theologian, as well as a writer whose brilliant command of the language marked him as a master of French prose. His early, anonymous masterpiece Les Lettres Provinciales became the model for Voltaire's polemics. Pascal's Pensees, his last great work, remained unfinished at the time of his death at age thirty-nine.
After the death of French scientist/polemicist Blaise Pascal (1623-1662), his friends discovered among his papers a variety of jottings on religion. These they arranged and published as PENSÉES ("Thoughts"), which has come down to us as the liveliest, most eloquent apology of Christianity ever written. You wouldn't know it by the indifferent reading of William Sutherland. He reads with comprehension of individual lines and phrases, but with no sense of how they relate to one another.
