Synopsis
En 1776, contraint à la solitude par ses ennemis, Rousseau choisit de se retirer loin des tumultes et des persécutions pour se consacrer à ses méditations personnelles, qu'il consigne sur des cartes à jouer. Si Les Confessions, oeuvre testamentaire achevée six ans plus tôt, suivaient le fil chronologique d'une vie, le philosophe s'abandonne ici à l'exercice voluptueux de la sincérité, suivant le cours imprévisible de son âme comme la ligne sinueuse d'une promenade. Par la marche, la contemplation et la botanique, au gré des associations d'esprit libérées des rigueurs de l'argumentation, ces dix Rêveries recueillent le pur jaillissement de son "chant intérieur". Les paysages deviennent un refuge, une consolation rédemptrice face aux douleurs de l'existence. Fusionnant avec la nature, l'individu peut désormais cultiver un bonheur serein. Entre mémoires, confessions et essai, cette oeuvre inclassable, inachevée (Rousseau meurt en 1778), connaît un succès retentissant et durable, en révolutionnant l'écriture de soi. Plus qu'un témoignage nostalgique, ces Rêveries sont une ultime confidence, adressées peut-être à personne mais destinées à chacun de nous.

About the Author
Jean Grenier est né à Paris en 1898. Il a passé sa jeunesse à Saint-Brieuc où il s'est lié d'amitié avec Max Jacob et Louis Guilloux. Il a été professeur à Alger, à l'Institut français de Naples, à la faculté des lettres de Lille, aux universités d'Alexandrie et du Caire, et enfin à la Sorbonne où il a occupé la chaire d'esthétique. Le Grand Prix national des Lettres lui a été décerné en 1968. Il a collaboré à de nombreuses revues d'art et de littérature, dont La Nouvelle Revue française. Il est mort en 1971.
