Salman Rushdie, né à Bombay en 1947, a longtemps vécu en Grande-Bretagne avant de s'établir aux Etats Unis. Les Enfants de Minuit, couronné par le Booker Prize en 1981 et publié pour la première fois en France en 1983, a connu aussitôt un immense succès mondial, et placé son auteur au premier rang des écrivains majeurs de notre temps. Salman Rushdie est aussi l'auteur d'essais, de nouvelles et de plusieurs romans, parmi lesquels Les Versets sataniques (Christian Bourgois, 1989 et Plon, 1999), Le Dernier Soupir du Maure (Plon, 1996), Shalimar le clown (Plon, 2005). Il a été anobli par la Reine d'Angleterre en 2007.
