Au fil d'une succession de scènes sans liaison, comme autant de cris et d'halètements qui accompagnent la traversée de l'enfer et l'accès à la lumière, Meaume dit ses extases, son art, ses désirs, mais aussi la créativité, l'amour, l'apparence et la vérité. En homme "que les images attaquent", il énonce ses visions, sa fascination pour l'opposition et la complémentarité du clair-obscur. Le champ de la créativité a toujours captivé Pascal Quignard, comme l'illustrent ses précédents romans (citons les deux "goncourables", Le Salon du Wurtemberg et Les Escaliers de Chambord).
