Le 28 juillet 1907, André Gide, qui séjournait dans la propriété de son ami Eugène Rouart à Bagnols-de-Grenade, non loin de Toulouse, fait la rencontre d'un jeune homme, Ferdinand, fils d'un valet de ferme. Avec celui qu'il surnommera le "Ramier", en raison d'une sorte de roucoulement qu'il produisait en faisant l'amour, l'écrivain presque quadragénaire va vivre une nuit d'extase dont il sortira "plus jeune de dix ans". À chaud, il écrira le récit lyrique et minutieux de cet épisode, et le fera lire à quelques proches, dont Jacques Copeau. Plusieurs fois, Gide reviendra à Bagnols, et se préoccupera du sort du jeune Ferdinand, qui mourra en 1910.
