Intervenant après Phèdre, Pausanias, Eryximaque, Aristophane et Agathon lui-même, Socrate place son éloge sur un autre plan : l'amour n'est ni la beauté ni la bonté, il en est le désir. Alcibiade arrive alors, totalement ivre... La beuverie se prolonge toute la nuit.
Ce dialogue, l'un des plus célèbres de Platon (428-347 av. J.-C.), exprime un aspect essentiel de sa philosophie : s'il sait dépasser la simple attraction physique, l'amour incite à la contemplation des Idées, de l'essence des choses.
