About the Author

René Descartes (31 mars 1596 - 11 février 1650), également connu sous le nom de Renatus Cartesius (forme latinisée), était un philosophe, mathématicien, scientifique et juriste français hautement influent. Baptisé le «Fondateur de la philosophie moderne» et le «Père des mathématiques modernes», une grande partie de la philosophie occidentale subséquente est une réaction à ses écrits, qui ont été étroitement étudiés de son temps jusqu'à nos jours. Son influence en mathématiques est également apparente, le système de coordonnées cartésiennes étant utilisé dans la géométrie plane et l'algèbre étant nommé après lui, et il a été l'un des personnages clés de la Révolution Scientifique. Descartes contrastait fréquemment ses vues avec celles de ses prédécesseurs. Dans la première partie des Passions de l'âme, un traité sur la version moderne de ce que l'on appelle maintenant les émotions, il va jusqu'à affirmer qu'il écrira sur son sujet «comme si personne n'avait écrit sur ces questions avant". Néanmoins, de nombreux éléments de sa philosophie ont des précédents dans l'aristotelisme tardif, le stoïcisme ranimé du XVIe siècle ou chez des philosophes antérieurs comme saint Augustin. Dans sa philosophie naturelle, il se distingue des Écoles sur deux points principaux: d'abord, il rejette l'analyse de la substance corporelle en matière et en forme; Deuxièmement, il rejette tout appel aux fins - divines ou naturelles - pour expliquer les phénomènes naturels. Dans sa théologie, il insiste sur la liberté absolue de l'acte de création de Dieu. Descartes était une figure majeure du rationalisme continental du 17ème siècle, plus tard défendue par Baruch Spinoza et Gottfried Leibniz, et opposée par l'école empiriste de pensée composée de Hobbes, Locke, Berkeley et Hume. Leibniz, Spinoza et Descartes étaient tous versés dans les mathématiques aussi bien que la philosophie, et Descartes et Leibniz ont grandement contribué à la science aussi. En tant qu'inventeur du système de coordonnées cartésiennes, Descartes a fondé la géométrie analytique, ce pont entre l'algèbre et la géométrie cruciale à l'invention du calcul et de l'analyse.
