About the Author
"Victor Hugo est né à Besançon en 1802. Tout en suivant des études de philosophie et de mathématiques au lycée Louis-le-Grand, il s'adonne déjà à la poésie. Il obtient ses premiers succès avec les Odes et Poésies diverses (1822) et s'impose comme chef de file du mouvement romantique après l'ardente "" bataille "" autour de son drame Hernani (1830). Dès lors, sa réputation ne cesse de croître (Notre-Dame de Paris, 1831, Ruy Blas, 1838, Les Rayons et les Ombres, 1840) ; il se tourne vers la politique, et rejoint le camp des "" libéraux "". Mais le coup d'État de Napoléon III le contraint à un long exil. Réfugié à Guernesey, il multiplie les chefs-d'œuvre : Les Châtiments (1853), Les Contemplations (1856), Les Misérables (1859), La Légende des siècles (1859-1883). Après la chute du second Empire (1870), son retour en France est triomphal. Il ne cessera d'écrire (Quatrevingt-treize, roman, 1874, L'Art d'être grand-père, 1877) jusqu'à sa mort en 1885 à Paris, suivie de monumentales funérailles nationales au Panthéon."
