Dans L'Invention de la mémoire, Israel Rosenfield conteste ce mythe. Il nous raconte les travaux de Charcot, Broca, Dejerine, entre autres, qui ont fondé la neurologie, la psychologie et la philosophie moderne. Analysant et critiquant les diverses théories du mode de fonctionnement de la mémoire et du cerveau en général, Israel Rosenfield montre en particulier comment l'idée d'utiliser l'ordinateur comme modèle de fonctionnement du cerveau se révèle inadéquate.Freud a essayé de résoudre le paradoxe suivant : si les souvenirs sont réellement stockés en permanence quelque part dans le cerveau, pourquoi nous est-il si difficile de les rappeler à volonté sous leur forme originelle ? La notion d'inconscient tente de répondre à cette question, mais aujourd'hui d'autres travaux nous donnent de meilleures réponses, en particulier ceux du prix Nobel Gerald Edelman. La théorie d'Edelman affirme que nous pouvons reconnaître, nous souvenir, sans qu'il y ait besoin d'«inventer» un centre de la mémoire : nous ne pensons pas, nous ne nous souvenons pas, notre cerveau ne fonctionne pas comme un ordinateur. Comme des magiciens, nous réinventons notre passé. Ce que nous sortons du chapeau magique qu'est notre mémoire est différent de ce que nous y avons mis, et le chapeau a lui aussi changé.
