La naissance du français est un acte politique : en 842, Les Serments de Strasbourg sont écrits dans deux langues vivantes dont l’une, romane, marque les débuts officiels du français. Ce « protofrançais », ayant ainsi accédé à l’écriture, reçoit alors une forme commune et acquiert un statut politique. Cet ouvrage retrace l’histoire des origines de notre langue et de sa mise en écrit au Moyen Âge.
