The personality of the King of Egypt is multiple; it is at the same time solar (because he is the son of Re) , celestial (the living king is a Horus, a figure hovering over the vault of Heaven) and Osirian (the dead and resurrected king becomes an Osiris). He is an intercessor between the gods and men; for the former, he ensures the accomplishment of worship; for the latter, he is the guarantor of prosperity, justice and victory. The Ancients have particularly retained two theological themes which found the pharaonic power. The sovereign is first a child-king and a god-king; stories and images have transmitted to us the representation of the theogamies from which the sovereigns are carnally issued; similarly we know that the pharaoh remained the divine child who is seen ritually breastfed by a goddess. Finally, the warlord king originates from a world of hunters, at a time when man and animal were not yet separate species. This work is a treatise on pharaonic royalty, resituated in relation to other so-called sacred royalty: ancient Asian theocracies, monarchies of Indo-European societies with a trifunctional organization, traditional African royalty.
