Synopsis
Sous le règne de Louis XIII, le baron de Sigognac, unique héritier d'une noble famille ruinée, vit pauvrement dans son castel délabré en compagnie d'un unique serviteur. II accueille un soir d'orage, une troupe de comédiens ambulants venus demander asile. Le baron décide alors d'accompagner la troupe jusqu'à Paris pour y tenter la fortune. Le charme et la grâce d'une des comédiennes : Isabelle, entrent d'ailleurs pour beaucoup dans sa détermination. Le long chemin qui les sépare de la capitale sera jalonné par bien des péripéties, car le redoutable et puissant duc de Vallombreuse tombe à son tour amoureux d'Isabelle et tente sans aucun scrupule de faire disparaître son rival : Sigognac, bientôt surnommé le capitaine Fracasse. Attaque de brigands, duel au point du jour, enlèvement et coups de théâtre... ce roman plusieurs fois adapté à l'écran et rédigé dans une langue somptueuse, offre à l'auditeur un éventail de scènes pittoresques, burlesques ou; dramatiques presque ininterrompu.

About the Author
(1811-1872). Theophile Gautier debute dans la peinture, puis se fait poete par admiration pour Victor Hugo. Parti du romantisme flamboyant, il va devenir l'un des chefs de file de la jeune poesie parnassienne des annees 1860. Poete, romancier, journaliste, grand voyageur a la curiosite insatiable, il a marque la vie litteraire de son temps.
