Par ce seul livre posthume, John Kennedy Toole gagna une place à part, et une des premières, dans la littérature américaine contemporaine : il reçut le prix Pulitzer en 1981 pour ce roman tumultueux - gargantuesque tragicomédie située dans l'ambiance grouillante des bas quartiers de La Nouvelle-Orléans. Lors de sa publication en France, la même année, l'accueil fut tout aussi enthousiaste, et ce roman-phénomène fit écrire à Jean Clémentin, dans Le Canard enchaîné, les lignes suivantes, toujours d'actualité : Un ouvrage de génie comme il n'en paraît pas beaucoup par siècle. Il faudrait des colonnes entières pour détailler les cruautés, les trouvailles, la verve épicolyrique, la puissance de cet ouvrage. Cette audace, son auteur l'a payée au prix fort : déprimé de ne pas trouver d'éditeur, il s'est suicidé en 1969, à trente et un ans. Onze ans après, sa mère, remuant ciel et terre, réussit à trouver une minuscule maison d'édition, en Louisiane.
