About the Author
Né en 1926 dans l'État de New York et après une enfance instable dominée par le divorce de ses parents, Richard Yates rejoint l'armée : il est envoyé en France, puis en Allemagne juste après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. De retour à New York au début des années 1950, il devient journaliste, puis nègre (il écrit pendant un temps les discours du sénateur Robert Kennedy), et travaille ensuite dans la publicité. En 1961, paraît aux États-Unis La Fenêtre panoramique, formidable succès critique. Après la publication de ce premier roman, finaliste du National Book Award, il enseigne à l'Université de Colombia à Manhattan, puis à celle de Boston. Il est soutenu par de nombreux écrivains dont Kurt Vonnegut, Dorothy Parker, William Styron ou Tennessee Williams et il exerce une forte influence sur Andre Dubus, Raymond Carver et Richard Ford. Il meurt en 1992.
