Jerome David Salinger naît le 1er janvier 1919 à New York d'un père juif et d'une mère catholique irlandaise. Il entre en 1934 à l'Académie militaire puis, en 1936, à l'université. Dix ans plus tard, il est enrôlé dans l'armée comme agent de renseignement et débarque en Normandie. À la fin de la guerre, il épouse une Française dont il divorce quelques mois plus tard. En 1955, Mme Claire Douglas devient sa seconde femme. Elle lui donnera deux enfants. L'auteur a publié quatre livres avant qu'il ne se retire du monde dans sa maison du New Hampshire. Un jour rêvé pour le poisson-banane est publié pour la première fois en 1948 dans le New Yorker et introduit les personnages de la famille Glass. Viennent ensuite Franny et Zooey et Dressez haut la poutre maîtresse, charpentiers. L'Attrape-Cœurs, qui compte parmi les vingt-cinq livres les plus vendus de l'histoire de l'édition américaine, est publié pour la première fois en France dans la collection « Pavillons » en 1953. Jerome David Salinger est mort le 27 janvier 2010.
