David trouve refuge auprès de sa tante, la douce et ronde Mae. Mais bientôt, celle-ci part pour Nashville, et le pasteur décide de placer la mère de David à l'asile...

Né en 1937 à la Nouvelle-Orléans, John Kennedy Toole fait de bonnes études à l'Université de Columbia, enseigne au Hunter College de New York et entame une thèse de doctorat qu'il interrompt en 1961 pour partir à l'armée. En poste à Porto Rico, il y enseigne l'anglais et écritLa Conjuration des imbéciles. De retour chez ses parents, il devient professeur au Dominican College de la Nouvelle-Orléans. Mais ses démarches pour faire publier son roman reste vaines. Déprimé par cet échec, il finit par se suicider en 1969. La Conjuration des imbéciles paraît en 1981 grâce aux efforts de sa mère et obtient le prix Pulitzer à titre posthume l'année suivante. La Bible de néon, unique autre œuvre de l'auteur, est publié en 1989 aux États-Unis et traduit pour la première fois en français en 1991, dans la collection « Pavillons ».
