Jean-Pierre Petit, astrophysicien et directeur de recherche au CNRS, participe en Angleterre à un congrès consacré à la « propulsion avancée ». Il y fait des rencontres étranges. Des collègues américains lui apprennent que les États-Unis, loin d'avoir abandonné les recherches en « MHD » (magnétohydrodynamique), les auraient au contraire poursuivies à grands frais et dans le secret le plus absolu. Un engin nommé Aurora volerait à 10 000 km/h et à 60 km d'altitude depuis 1990. Les Américains posséderaient également des torpilles « hypervéloces » filant à 2 000 km/h. Les Russes avaient engagé des recherches sur des projets analogues qu'ils n'ont pu achever faute de moyens financiers. Les Européens, quant à eux, ont vingt-cinq ans de retard : rigoureusement irrattrapables, estime Jean-Pierre Petit.
