Synopsis
Au début des années 1830, Balzac travaille à un ouvrage : les Scènes de la vie militaire, scènes parmi lesquelles il place un récit, La Bataille. En décembre 1834, il en parle encore avec assurance. Il promet un tableau de Paris au commencement du XVème siècle, une histoire du temps de Louis XIII, et, toujours, cette fameuse Bataille dont il précise l'époque, en y ajoutant Vue de l'Empire, 1809. Quelle bataille ? Wagram ? Marengo ? Arcole ? Non, Essling. En 1833, il écrit à Madame Hanska : "Là, j'entreprends de vous initier à toutes les horreurs, à toutes les beautés d'un champ de bataille ; ma bataille, c'est Essling. Essling avec toutes ses conséquences. Il faut que, dans son fauteuil, un homme froid voie la campagne, les accidents de terrain, les masses d'hommes, les événement stratégiques, le Danube, les ponts, admire les détails et l'ensemble de cette lutte, entende l'artillerie, s'intéresse à ces mouvements d'échiquier, voie tout, sente, dans chaque articulation de ce grand corps, Napoléon, que je ne montrerai pas, ou que je laisserai voir le soir traversant dans une barque le Danube. Pas une tête de femme, des canons, des chevaux, deux armées, des uniformes ; à la première page, le canon gronde, il se tait à la dernière". Bousculé par mille personnages, mille sujets, Balzac ne nous donnera jamais sa Bataille. La voici, racontée avec talent par Patrick Rambaud. Il nous conte ces deux journées féroces et folles, qui laissent quarante mille morts dans les blés... Quel aventure ! Une fois le Danube franchi, un matin de mai, vous chevaucherez avec Lannes, Bessières et Masséna ; vous sentirez la chaleur des incendies, vous connaîtrez Lejeune et les états-majors... Un roman audacieux, dans la tourmente.
