Synopsis
« Après La Bataille, après Il neigeait, voici le troisième volet de ma fin d'Empire. Cette fois, je vous emmène en 1814. L'Europe envahit la France pour abattre Napoléon. Paris est assiégée, ses habitants voient apparaître des Cosaques entre les moulins de Montmartre. Nous suivons Octave, un agent impérial qui infiltre les milieux royalistes : réunis dans un Comité, des conjurés préparent en effet le retour des Bourbons. La capitale est bientôt investie, les armées étrangères défilent sur les Grands boulevards, et Octave se retrouve dans une situation trouble : les royalistes l'envoient espionner Napoléon, reclus à Fontainebleau, quand à Paris il espionnait les royalistes pour Napoléon. Il restera cependant fidèle à l'Empire, profitant de son rôle pour intoxiquer le nouveau gouvernement de Louis XVIII. Après bien des péripéties, ce témoin privilégié va assister à l'abandon des maréchaux, à la tentative de suicide de l'Empereur, à son abdication forcée, et il le suivra en exil à l'Ile d'Elbe, un rocher au large de la Toscane. Comment un homme qui a gouverné un continent peut-il supporter de régenter une sous-préfecture ? Il est entouré d'agents secrets et d'assassins, on vient le visiter de toute l'Europe comme un animal de zoo, il a peur, il joue, il déprime, il rêve, se maquille en arlequin pour un bal masqué que donne sa soeur Pauline, organise une Cour de pacotille. Pour la première fois, la seule de son aventure, l'Empereur devient humain. Cet épisode de l'île d'Elbe nous permet de le voir de près. En France, le soir dans les casernes, ses anciens soldats souhaitent son retour. Ils trinquent à l'Absent. » P.R.
