L'auteur précipite nos protagonistes d'un coup d'accélérateur impatient du haut du pont de Queensborough à bord d'une décapotable. « C'est une histoire naturaliste, comme, au fond, tous les bons romans. Comme ceux de Fitzgerald. Je me demande si, dans cette jeune fille de la bonne société new-yorkaise se mariant par provocation avec un gardien de parking, ce n'est pas le motif fitzgeraldien, le sentiment découlant du social, qui l'a fait rejeter par Capote. Jusque là, chez lui, et encore dans La Harpe d'herbe, le social n'a aucune importance relativement au sentiment, folle du logis sudiste qui radote avec un génie plus comparable à celui de Tennessee Williams.
