Né en 1945 en Pennsylvanie, Dean Koontz publie son premier roman, Star Quest, en 1968, mais c'est La nuit des cafards (1980) qui le révèle au grand public. Depuis, une vingtaine de ses oeuvres ont figuré en première place de la liste des best-sellers du New York Times. Dean Koontz a également écrit plusieurs ouvrages sous divers pseudonymes; certains sont aujourd'hui vendus sous son véritable nom. Il réside à Newport Beach, en Californie.
