Synopsis
Depuis leur publication en 1883, Les Aventures de Pinocchio ont poursuivi une carrière triomphale. Traduites dans toutes les langues de l'Europe mais aussi en swahili, en assamais, en papiamento, leurs tirages rivalisent sans doute avec ceux de la Bible ou du Coran. A l'heure de la globalisation, le qualificatif d'universel leur convient comme un gant. Comme Peter Pan, son frère cadet, Pinocchio possède une double nature qui lui permet d'évoluer aux confins de la fable et de la réalité, mais, à la différence du lutin de Kensington, il ne cherche pas refuge au pays des rêves. Il affronte avec une infinie curiosité tous les dangers du vaste monde, qu'ils revêtent l'aspect de deux aigrefins patibulaires, d'un insatiable serpent, voire d'un piège à loups. Il possède tous les traits d'une nature exubérante et débridée avec l'impertinence et l'anarchisme foncier de l'enfance. Ce chef-d'oeuvre de la « littérature pour la jeunesse » est aussi héritier d'une prestigieuse tradition qui n'est guère éloignée d'Orwell ou de Kafka. La brillante adaptation cinématographique de Roberto Benigni vient opportunément nous le rappeler.

About the Author
Carlo Collodi is the pen name of Italian author Carlo Lorenzini, creator of the beloved children s character, Pinocchio. A Tuscan who fought in Italy s wars of unification, Collodi was already a famous novelist and popular translator of French fairy tales when he began to contribute chapters in the life of a marionette to Italy s first newspaper for children, Il Giornale per i Bambini. The adventures of the disobedient puppet were an immediate success and Pinocchio s story has been translated and adapted numerous times, including the classic 1940 animated production from Walt Disney. Collodi died in 1890.
