Synopsis
Pour mieux juger de la fidélité de Lélio qu’elle doit épouser, mais qui ne la connaît pas, une jeune et riche Parisienne se présente à lui déguisée en faux chevalier. Elle découvre alors qu’il doit se marier avec une comtesse envers qui il a contracté des dettes. Pour éviter à Lélio d’avoir à rompre ce mariage et payer dix mille livres de dédit, le faux chevalier courtise la comtesse, puis la vérité sur son sexe se trouve révélée : le faux chevalier se fait finalement passer pour la suivante de
la comtesse.
La comédie que Marivaux fait jouer au Théâtre-Italien en 1724 aurait donc dû s’intituler plutôt Le Faux Chevalier. Le titre nous trompe-t-il ou le travestissement de la condition sociale l’emporte-t-il ici sur le travestissement du sexe ? Marivaux en tout cas a un but : dissiper l’illusion qui accompagne les sentiments, faire tomber le masque de l’infâme Lélio, et mettre à nu la vérité. Jeu brillant de la surprise et du badinage, mais aussi jeu cruel où le comique ne va pas sans noirceur.
