Non, Monsieur Rikyu (1522-1591), Grand Maître de thé issu du bouddhisme zen, n'est pas mort dans son lit ! Il s'est fait hara-kiri à l'âge de 69 ans. Pourquoi s'est-il donné la mort ? Un vieux moine, son disciple, tente d'élucider le mystère de ce suicide.
Ce livre-enquête nous projette dans le Japon de la fin du xvie et du début du xviie siècle. A cette époque, la cérémonie du thé était un acte grave, un rituel qui témoignait d'un engagement redoutable, empreint d'exigences éthiques et politiques, prétexte parfois à des négociations secrètes.
Le Maître de thé est donc tout naturellement un roman d'initiation, de méditation, lyrique et sensuel à la fois. A travers la figure historique de Rikyu, Yasushi Inoué (1907-1991) dresse le portrait d'une génération hantée par la mort. Etrange de penser qu'il a écrit là son dernier récit et sans doute son chef-d'oeuvre, publié en 1991, l'année même de sa disparition !

About the Author
Yasushi Inoué est un des plus célèbres romanciers japonais. Il se fait connaître grâce à une nouvelle récompensée par le prestigieux Prix Akutagawa en 1949 : Combats de taureaux . Il se met ensuite à publier un grand nombre de romans et de nouvelles dont les thèmes sont souvent historiques et minutieusement documentés, comme la Tuile de Tenpyo (1957) ou le Maître de thé (1991). Il est élu en 1964 à l’Académie des Arts et préside l’Association littéraire japonaise de 1969 à 1972. Il reçoit l’Ordre National du Mérite en 1976. Il sera également élu vice-président du PEN Club International en 1984. Il a reçu, en 1950, le prix Akutagawa, la plus prestigieuse récompense littéraire du japon, pour Le fusil de chasse.
