About the Author:
Wilbur Smith est né le 9 janvier 1933 en Rhodésie du Nord (actuelle Zambie) et vit depuis toujours en Afrique, source d'inspiration de la plupart de ses romans. C'est à sept ans qu'il décida de devenir écrivain après avoir déclaré à ses parents qu'il n'avait plus besoin d'aller à l'école, puisqu'il savait lire et écrire. Il fit néanmoins de brillantes études, en Afrique du Sud, avant d'entreprendre une carrière d'homme d'affaires. En 1964, Wilbur Smith publia son premier livre, Quand le lion a faim. Un succès immédiat, qui lui permit de se consacrer à la littérature. En 1993, il se lança avec succès dans une fresque historique consacrée sur l'Egypte avec Le Dieu Fleuve, Le Septième Papyrus, et Les Fils du Nil. Pendant plus de vingt ans Wilbur Smith a organisé son année selon un rythme immuable : il voyageait de novembre à janvier en Afrique, en Europe ou en Amérique, travaillait de février à juin compris, laissait reposer son manuscrit en juillet, le reprenait au mois d'août et le livrait à son éditeur en octobre. Aujourd'hui il a abandonné ce rythme soutenu pour celui, plus tranquille, d'un roman tous les deux ou trois ans. Auteur de vingt-neuf ouvrages dont vingt-sept ont été édités par les Presses de la Cité en France, Wilbur Smith est considéré depuis de nombreuses années comme le maître incontesté du roman d'aventures. Tous ses livres ont été des best-sellers mondiaux - ils sont traduits en vingt-sept langues - atteignant des tirages cumulés de soixante-dix millions d'exemplaires.
