Mais la ruine, le désastre et la tragédie guettent à la fois le garçon et le banquier... Edmund White réussit ici un remarquable tour de force littéraire. Un texte qui explore la vie sordide du New York de la fin du XIXe siècle tout en proposant l'admirable portrait d'une femme amoureuse d'un écrivain de génie. Un roman surprenant, humain et subtil.

Né en 1940 à Cincinnati, Ohio, Edmund White se fait connaître du grand public dix ans après sa participation au groupe Violet Quill, mouvement d'écriture gay new-yorkais. Enseignant à l'université de Princeton, il est l'auteur de plusieurs romans, Écorché vif, La bibliothèque qui brûle, La Symphonie des adieux, L'Homme marié, d'une autobiographie, Mes vies (tous disponibles chez 10/18), d'un récit, City Boy (Feux Croisés, 2010) et d'une biographie de Jean Genet (Gallimard, 1993).
