Éveil à la conscience, amorcé à Cambridge, lieu du bonheur et de la tolérance pour Forster, Maurice est le récit de la lente progression du héros vers une véritable connaissance de soi. Au-delà de l'histoire d'amour et de la prise de conscience homosexuelle, Maurice se distingue des autres romans de Forster par son caractère plus intimiste et par la forme plus radicale que revêt l'expression de la liberté individuelle. Placée sous le signe de la gradation, cette oeuvre est peuplée de personnages qui sont aux autres autant d'étapes vers l'accomplissement de soi.
