Amadou Hampâté Bâ, descendant d'une famille aristocratique peule, est né au Mali en 1900. Écrivain, historien, ethnologue, poète et conteur, il est l'un des plus grands spécialistes de la culture peule et des traditions africaines.Chercheur à l'Institut français d'Afrique Noire de Dakar dès 1942, Amadou Hampâté Bâ fut l'un des premiers intellectuels africains à recueillir, transcrire et expliquer les trésors de la littérature orale traditionnelle ouest-africaine – contes, récits, fables, mythes et légendes. Ses premières publications datent de cette période. En 1962, au Conseil exécutif de l'UNESCO, où il siégeait depuis 1960, il a attiré l'attention sur l'extrême fragilité de la culture ancestrale africaine en lançant un cri d'alarme devenu célèbre : "En Afrique, quand un vieillard meurt, c'est une bibliothèque qui brûle".Outre des contes, comme Petit Bodiel et autres contes de la savane, Amadou Hampâté Bâ a écrit des ouvrages d'histoire, des essais religieux, comme Jésus vu par un musulman, ou Vie et enseignement de Tierno Bokar, le sage de Bandiagara, ainsi que ses mémoires, Amkoullel l'enfant peul, suivi de Oui, mon commandant, publiés en France à partir de 1991.Amadou Hampâté Bâ est mort à Abidjan en mai 1991.
