L'optimisme débordant du jeune Candide, va, au fil des aventures et des déconvenues, se transformer en une vision plus noire : notre héros découvrant, en mûrissant, à quel point le monde peut être mauvais. Candide, conte philosophique, fait évoluer les personnages à la fois dans un monde réel et fictif. Grâce à ce double niveau de lecture (récit d'aventure et dimension plus métaphysique) Voltaire, philosophe des Lumières, en profite pour critiquer et dénoncer différents aspects de la société. Il est notamment pour l'abolition de l'esclavage, de l'autodafé et veut rétablir une certaine égalité entre les hommes. Grâce à l'épisode de l'Eldorado, il dresse également une satire de l'utopie. Dans le dernier chapitre, Candide jettera un regard plus lucide et aura le mot de la fin : " Il faut cultiver notre jardin ".

Voltaire (Francois-Marie Arouet) (1694--1778) was one of the key thinkers of the European Enlightenment. Of his many works, "Candide" remains the most popular.
Peter Constantine was awarded the 1998 PEN Translation Award for "Six Early Stories "by Thomas Mann and the 1999 National Translation Award for "The Undiscovered Chekhov: Forty-three New Stories."
