Philippe Soupault (1897-1990) was a French writer and poet, novelist, critic, and political activist. He was active in Dadaism and later founded the Surrealist movement with André Breton. In "Le Nègre" the narrator focuses on his hero, Edgar Manning, a black jazz drummer and drug dealer.
