Synopsis
En 1768, Jean-Valentin Vastey, un jeune paysan normand, part tenter fortune à Saint-Domingue. C'est alors la colonie la plus juteuse du royaume. Et la chance lui sourit bientôt. Il épouse la fille d'un riche planteur. On la dira liée à la famille d'Alexandre Dumas. Voilà Jean-Valentin à la tête de 80 captifs. Mais le vent tourne. Les métis, les esclaves se soulèvent tandis que les blancs s'accrochent à leurs privilèges. Vastey croise Toussaint Louverture et fuit sa plantation en feu. Ruiné, malade, que deviendra-t-il, lui, le colon dont le fils embrasse la cause des noirs. A l'indépendance d'Haïti, ce fils connaît un destin fabuleux. Anobli, il devient la voix du régime et le conseiller du roi Christophe dont il partagera la fin tragique. Le baron de Vastey laissa derrière lui des écrits enflammés contre le colonialisme. On le considère aujourd'hui comme le père de la négritude.

Journaliste, Laurent Quevilly, a été impliqué dans la découverte des Mémoires d'un paysan bas-breton. Il nous livre ici une saga familiale bâtie à partir de la correspondance des Vastey retrouvée par miracle. Ces lettres brossent la vie quotidienne d'un planteur de Saint-Domingue et apportent un éclairage inédit sur une grande figure de la révolution haïtienne. Emaillé de révélations surprenantes, cet ouvrage est la toute première biographie du baron de Vastey.
