Comptant parmi les pionniers de l’art vidéo, Robert Cahen (né en 1945) transpose dans le champ de l’image les innovations de la musique concrète auxquelles il contribue dans les années 1970 au sein du Groupe de recherches musicales (GRM) fondé par Pierre Schaeffer.Expérimentateur exigeant, il développe depuis près de quarante ans une œuvre subtile, nourrie par des thématiques fédératrices telles que le passage du temps, le voyage et la musique, portée par des choix esthétiques qui interrogent notre rapport à l’image.Le catalogue « Robert Cahen. Entrevoir » présente un ensemble d’installations pour la plupart inédites qui jouent sur la matière-même de l’image, manipulent sa trame, son espace, son mouvement, ses rémanences, sa construction entre superpositions et partitions. Le spectateur est confronté tantôt à une vision éphémère, fragile, fictionnelle comme dans Entrevoir – projection suspendue et faussement panoramique d’une traversée du paysage – tantôt à des réminiscences ambigües comme dans Françoise endormie où l’artiste condense la tension entre passé, présent et futur, propre à tout processus mémoriel. En outre, des portraits vidéographiques renvoient à l’exploration d’une intime et singulière altérité.Les œuvres de Robert Cahen nous invitent à sonder les frontières du visible pour mieux percevoir la poésie du réel et retrouver l’essence du regard dans l’échange et la contemplation.
