Un essai d’esthétique percutant sur l’art des cavernes. « Les peintures rupestres sont – d’une certaine manière – un art très récent » : la découverte de la grotte de Lascaux par quatre adolescents et, moins de cent ans auparavant, l’invention de la grotte d’Altamira en Espagne, premier exemple d’art pariétal reconnu comme tel, ont pris d’un nouveau vertige la conscience humaine. C’est dans le sillage de Walter Benjamin et de Karl Kraus, dont il est le traducteur, que Maël Renouard sonde cette grotte où se nouent l’imaginaire et la mélancolie, et scrute les images, énigmatiques entre toutes, qu’elle conserve. Il porte un regard distancié, souvent ludique, rétif à la totalité, sur ce lieu qui est tout à la fois un fait, une absence et un mythe.

Maël Renouard est l’auteur, entre autres, de Fragments d’une mémoire infinie (Grasset, 2016) et de La Réforme de l’opéra de Pékin (Rivages, 2013), récompensé par le prix Décembre. Il est également traducteur (de Nietzsche, Arthur Schnitzler, Angelus Silesius, Joseph Conrad...).
