En s’appropriant une vision non-orthodoxe de l’urbanisme, Alejo Carpentier nous amène et nous promène dans les rues de La Havane où le foisonnement de colonnes, portes, grilles et portails s’érige en vestige du long travail de l’histoire cubaine – ses invasions et métissages – et de celle des havanais peuplant une rue « bavarde, indiscrète » et des maisons « enfermées sur leur propre pénombre ».Avec Alejo Carpentier, les murs se muent en prolongement des corps ; ils deviennent vivants au contact des hommes qui les façonnent. Mais l’architecture, du palais majestueux au simple bouteroue le long des trottoirs, survit aux hommes et les façonne à son tour. L’entente se doit d’être réciproque afin de réconcilier les hommes et leur environnement, et ce sans plan d’urbanisme rigide et théorique mais grâce à un dialogue traversant les siècles.À l’instar du soleil, avec qui « pour entamer un dialogue [...] il faut [...] offrir les lunettes appropriées », Alejo Carpentier dans La Cité des colonnes nous invite à changer de point de vue, pour éviter les écueils de l’exotisme et de l’ethnocentrisme, sur la vie des rues et des maisons havanaises et de saisir leurs portées sociales, historiques et esthétiques.Avec la verve littéraire qu’on lui connaît, accompagnée des photographies de Paolo Gasparini des éléments urbains détaillés par Carpentier, ce dernier nous offre une exploration originale et poétique de La Havane.
