This work examines the relationship between Western eschatological thinking in the fifteenth century and fear of the Turks. It shows how theologians updated old medieval prophecies so that they could interpret the growing power of the Ottoman Empire as a sign of the end of the world.

Joel Elie Schnapp est agrege de lettres classiques. Apres un DEA a l'EHESS, il a soutenu sa these en 2012 a l'universite Paris - Nanterre. Le sujet portait sur les traditions apocalyptiques et leur renouvellement sous la pression ottomane au XV siecle. Il a publie auparavant des traductions de Georges de Hongrie et de Liutprand de Cremone. Il est actuellement membre associe du LUHCIE (Grenoble).
