Vers 1564, la reine réformée Jeanne d'Albret commande au jeune Guillaume Du Bartas nouvellement converti une réécriture du Livre de Judith. Ce n'est que dix ans plus tard, et après le décès de Jeanne, que paraît La Judit, première épopée de la France moderne. Défense de la foi protestante à travers la figure exemplaire, le poème témoigne aussi déjà de l'ampleur d'une innutrition qui se déploiera dans la savante Sepmaine. Le syncrétisme pagano-chrétien y révèle un Du Bartas déjà totalement irréductible à une littérature partisane. De subtiles et troublantes conciliations s'opèrent dans le poème, ô combien périlleuses. De celles-ci, la dédicace si controversée à la catholique Marguerite, épouse du futur Henri IV, semble bien être l'éloquent symbole.
