Synopsis

Materiality and Religious Practice in Medieval Denmark proposes to revisit and pave the way ahead for research in religious material culture in medieval Denmark. Gathering contributions from a wide array of experts, this anthology discusses the role of materiality and physicality in the religious experience and practice of medieval people. It investigates the uses of material objects, spaces, and bodies employed to make the sacred tangible, hereby acting as mediators between the earthly and the heavenly spheres. Thus, Materiality and Religious Practice in Medieval Denmark stresses the significance of the sensory, dramatic enactment that moved the soul, body, heart, and mind of the medieval faithful.
