Synopsis
Founded in 1964, Montreal's Musee d'art contemporain was the first major Canadian art institution to champion contemporary art. Today the museum celebrates its unparalleled collection with this encyclopedic review of abstract art, artists and art movements from the 1940s to today. A vast panorama of 110 works by 60 artists over seven decades is magnificently illustrated and discussed with both original essays by leading scholars and with rare archival texts written in the heat of the debates on the question of abstraction in Canada, particularly in Quebec. Accompanied by a bibliographic list of artists as well as an complete repertory of Canadian abstract art exhibitions since 1942.

About the Author
Josee Belisle, Curator of the Permanent Collection, has authored many monographs, notably on Wangechi Mutu (2012) and Betty Goodwin (2009). Mark Cheetham is the author of Remembering Postmodernism: Trends in Canadian Art, 1970-1990 (2012) and Editing the Image: Strategies in the Production and Reception of the Visual (2008).
