Umschlag berieben und von innen mit Klebestreifen repariert, sonst gutes Exemplar. - Rembrandt a dessiné, gravé et peint une centaine de portraits de lui-même. Pas un seul autre peintre n'a laissé un tel témoignage. Ces portraits de Rembrandt par lui-même sont le "récit" le plus intense de ce qu'est la création. Des premiers peints en 1625 - Rembrandt a alors dix-neuf ans - aux derniers peints l'année même de sa mort en 1669, c'est l'essentiel de sa vie même qui est livré, mis en évidence. Sa vie n'est que peinture. Ces portraits révèlent comment Rembrandt invente Rembrandt, comment le jeune peintre de talent qu'il est, reconnu et adulé, devient un génie solitaire. Rembrandt va de la gloire à la solitude par la faillite. Son ambition n'a que faire de reconnaissance et d'éloges; ils ne le comblent pas comme ils ne satisfont pas son exigence. Et Rembrandt ne cesse pas de peindre. C'est de son travail obstiné que témoignent ces portraits. De peinture en peinture, ils montrent l'évolution de sa technique comme aucune autre de ses uvres ne le fait. Lorsqu'il se peint seul, Rembrandt n'a de comptes à rendre qu'au peintre qu'il est. Ces portraits sont encore ceux d'un homme face à Dieu; ils sont des prières comme ils sont un défi à la mort.
