Premier traite de logique qu'Aristote ait ecrit, les Topiques sont consacres a l'argumentation dialectique, et ont ete completes par les traites sur le syllogisme (Premiers analytiques) et l'argumentation scientifique (Seconds analytiques). Le titre de l'ouvrage designe un reservoir de lieux (topoi) a partir desquels on peut argumenter. Bien que le mode d'argumentation expose dans les Topiques ne soit pas proprement scientifique, mais probable, Aristote affirme qu'il constitue un instrument (organon) pour la connaissance et la science au sens philosophique, remarque qui a donne son nom a l'ensemble de sa logique, l'organon. La traduction de Jean Tricot est exemplaire de clarte et de simplicite, et permet d'acceder a ce texte fondateur, le premier ouvrage de logique jamais ecrit.
