Synopsis
L'auteur s'interroge sur la definition de l'action, cherchant a mettre en evidence les liens intrinseques qui unissent cette notion a l'activite de l'esprit humain. En d'autres termes, devons-nous presupposer des agents responsables dotes d'intentions au phenomene de l'action, ou une action peut-elle se realiser independamment de toute demarche intentionnelle? Il s'agit par suite de considerer l'effectivite et la legitimite de la conception lineaire de l'action: le schema intention-volition-execution constitue-t-il la seule explication raisonnable d'une action? Si tel est le cas, les activites motrices se trouvent radicalement exclues de la notion d'action, alors qu'elles determinent des modes d'action, si ce n'est une action a proprement parler. Comment nous est-il possible de concilier action intentionnelle - aller voter, action intuitive - les reflexes, et action mecanique - respirer et marcher? Traitant de ce qu'est une action, l'ouvrage aborde ainsi plus largement les consequences qu'il nous faut tirer pour nos conceptions de l'agent, de la responsabilite et du vouloir.
