L'oeuvre de Newton, (né àBerlin en 1920, fuyant l Allemagne en1938 pour se rendre en
Australie dont il prend la nationalité, mort àLos Angeles en 2004), a cherché àrestituer la
beauté, l érotisme, l humour, que sa sensibilité lui permettait de relever dans les rapports
sociaux des mondes qu il fréquentait : la mode, le luxe, l argent, le pouvoir.
Dans ses thèmes de prédilection (mode, nus, portraits), il n a cessé de se libérer de toute
contrainte imposée, alors même qu il travaillait le plus souvent dans un cadre de
« photographie appliquée » àla mode et aux portraits.
Son oeuvre est une vision nouvelle et unique du corps féminin contemporain : nues ou en
smoking, les femmes de Newton sont puissantes, séductrices, dominantes, jamais glaciales
mais toujours impressionnantes, voire intimidantes.
Fortes de leur révolution sexuelle, elles assument la pleine liberté de leur corps, sans heure
ni cadre, ouvertes àtous les fantasmes et dans un raffinement extrême.
Il s agit de la première rétrospective sur Helmut Newton depuis sa mort en 2004.
L exposition réunit tirages originaux ou vintage réalisés sous le contrôle du photographe,
polaroids, tirages de travail, oeuvres monumentales et magazines tels Vogue.
