Né à Kyoto en 1949 et élevé à Kobe, Haruki Murakami a étudié le théâtre et le cinéma à l'université Waseda, avant d'ouvrir un club de jazz à Tokyo en 1974. Son premier roman Écoute le chant du vent (1979), un titre emprunté à Truman Capote, lui a valu le prix Gunzo et un succès immédiat. Suivront La Course au mouton sauvage, La Fin des temps, La Ballade de l'impossible, Danse, Danse, Danse et L'éléphant s'évapore (Seuil, 1990, 92, 94, 95 et 98). Exilé en Grèce en 1988, en Italie, puis aux États-Unis, où il écrit ses Chroniques de l'oiseau à ressort (Seuil, 2001) et Au sud de la frontière, à l'ouest du soleil (Belfond, 2002 ; 10/18, 2003), il rentre au Japon en 1995, écrit deux livres de non-fiction sur le séisme de Kobe et l'attentat de la secte Aum, un recueil de nouvelles, Après le tremblement de terre (10/18, 2002), Les Amants du spoutnik (Belfond, 2003 ; 10/18, 2004) et le superbe Kafka sur le rivage (Belfond, 2006). Plusieurs fois favori pour le Nobel de littérature, Haruki Murakami a reçu récemment le prestigieux Yomiuri Prize et le prix Kafka 2006.
